Chieko Kojima Hana Hachijo Intensive

  • Kaoru Watanabe Taiko Center 950 Saint Johns Place Brooklyn, NY, 11213 United States (map)

KWTC is proud to present a weekend long intensive with Chieko Kojima, one of the founding members of the iconic taiko Ensemble Kodo, known for mesmerizing audiences with both her elegance and passion. Chieko's signature interpretation of a folk drumming style from the island of Hachijo- one of the few places in Japan where women have traditionally been allowed to drum- is one of the most popular pieces in the Kodo repertoire. While she approaches Hana Hachijo as a dance more than as a drumming composition, she hits with power and precision and her movements are always functional in terms of creating efficient and dynamic strikes. This is a very rare opportunity to spend an extended amount of time with this truly one of a kind artist.

Workshop participants can expect to study Chieko's philosophy and methodology regarding posture, movement, balance and her approach to the piece Hana Hachijo: playing the jiuchi pattern, typical hachijo rhythmic patterns, developing one's solo and much much more.

Intensive Fee $500 - this fee covers all workshops, Friday dinner, Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner and Sunday breakfast and lunch (home cooked, healthy meals with vegetarian option), accommodations (communal), transportation costs NOT included. Student rates available.
