Introducing Jin Jin!

Hey Everyone!

This is Jin Jin, one of the new interns at KWTC. I am so excited to be joining such a great group of taiko players and musicians! I really enjoyed meeting students and friends of the taiko school at the recent Happyoukai. I might have introduced myself as Carol — I’m making the transition to my Chinese name Jin Jin (津津) but I go by both…. take your pick!

A little about me: I am a native of Hong Kong and recent graduate of Cornell University, where I first started playing taiko with Yamatai, in 2008.

Here’s a promo video that we made for this year’s spring concert (featuring Cornell’s beautiful landscape!). When I studied abroad in Berlin last year, I also got to play with a group called Taiko-Connection, performing at the Cherry Blossom Festival there. And it was this Spring, at a weekend-long workshop Yamatai did with Kaoru, that I was first introduced to the concept of the ‘unbendable arm’, and had my first fue lesson with Kaoru. I liked the workshop so much I continued to have regular fue lessons with Kaoru via Skype, and officially became an intern of the KWTC early June. Yeah!

I’m going to be somewhat different from Patty and Evan though – I will be a ‘long distance’ intern – because I will be starting a master’s degree in architecture at Harvard University this August. This means that I will be continuing lessons via Skype, visiting KWTC when I can during breaks, and helping out with the development of the taiko school from Boston. I look forward to getting to know the Boston taiko community, and to meeting more KWTC students and friends when I am in New York!

OK, some pictures now:

Workshop with Kaoru: Y for Yamatai…

‘Together Alone’, Kaoru’s composition for Mari performed during KWTC’s recent summer Happyoukai. (I’m the other fue player.)
