Sensing Symmetrical Soundscapes Straightaway

Sorry this post is late. I mean, obviously you were probably waiting with bated breath because you all actually know and care who I am and what I have to say, so I apologize for that. We’ve been doing apartment things, apparently furniture is pretty expensive. Ikea, I may write a monologue about it one day. But my room has a table and a bookcase, the last thing we need is the internet!

We’ve been doing Symmetrical Soundscapes by Kenny Endo in classes. It’s pretty challenging but a really fun piece. Patty went with Kaoru to a workshop he conducted in Philadelphia. We are sure a good time was had by all. He’s away this week performing in California so we’ve just been training by ourselves (oy) and buying furniture (double oy).

We did some Yatai Bayashi on Sunday after class. It was very hard and I still can’t play the pattern the whole way through – I can sing through it and practice pad it but doing it in the position is a totally different thing. This is true of all the styles we’re working on right now though – there’s a lot of form to think about and music is hard when you’re trying to juggle “lift the hands, keep the shoulders down, start from the back, use the space above, don’t stick your chin out, straighten the back, oh god my abs, oh god my abs don’t exist yet” and so forth.

We’re in the process of trying to expand the school and structure our training in a pretty massive way, so everything is a bit ambiguous right now, but that’s exciting.

We’re also going to take over his class this week at Wesleyan University (Evan’s and my alma mater) so that’s going to be pretty interesting – in case you don’t know what that’s about, Kaoru teaches three classes at Wesleyan every Friday. It’s a fully credited class from the Music Department. This semester they’re working on Renshuu (Seiichi Tanaka), Tobisari (uncertain but from the Kabuki play Kanjincho), OKKK (Kenny Endo), Miyake, Together Alone (Kaoru Watanabe) and Hiraki (Kaoru Watanabe). There’s also a new piece that is as yet unnamed.

Class this week!

Wednesday’s class is being led by Yumiko, our powerhouse classmate. Don’t mess with her man she’ll kick your butt.

Sunday is class as usual, 2pm.

See you there.
