Greetings all. This is Evan, the third of the taiko interns.
Our training is about to ramp up now that we’ve officially moved in to the city. Getting in shape, learning Kaoru’s repertoire, learning fue; we have our work cut out for us. Exciting!
Last week recap:
Patty, Cheryl and I have nailed down a loose schedule for our training: Yatai Sundays, Miyake Mondays and Odaiko Tuesdays. That began this past week, and brought with it a fair amount of pain and consternation. As it should.
Wednesday’s class went through a bunch of pieces that people knew and wanted to work on: Wachi Daiko, OKKK, Symmetrical Soundscapes and improvisation.
At the weekend, we interns were out of commission as we moved into our apartment (woo), but Saturday brought with it a party to mark the of Gureje’s Festival of Colors. There were performances throughout the day, including some by KWTC folks. In the early afternoon, Kaoru, Cheryl, Barbara and Yumiko performed a number of pieces to an intimate crowd. In the evening, Kaoru, Barbara and Tamango performed again, followed by a performance by the Will Calhoun Trio. Free beer and pizza flowed, and Kaoru and Tamango sat in with the trio before a rapturous audience. A good time was had by all.
Sunday’s class was focused on Symmetrical Soundscapes, particularly on soloing over a ji, and maintaining a ji while others solo.
