Hello everyone,
The weeklong tour in Western Pennsylvania with Kenny Endo and his son Miles is finished- we performed in small community and state college theaters with lots of driving between towns. It was very interesting traveling through that part of the country. One school only had one Japanese student among 5,000, while another, that had exactly zero Japanese students, they had a Japan-themed festival and were trying to raise money to donate to disaster relief. The festival included food tasting (instant ramen, tako yaki flavored cough drops, poki, etc) and “parapara” dance offs. The two most common comments after our final performance were “what are you guys doing way out here?” and “we NEVER get to see anything like this (taiko and fue) so thank you so much for coming”. In the end, it was a very gratifying experience and I met really wonderful people throughout the trip.
I’m in Montreal now, performing with percussionist Patrick Graham and hurdy gurdy player Ben Grossman. The music is both very free and very challenging- lots of improvising in odd-meters and group interaction.
Anyway, classes are continuing in my absence with various members of the KWTC ensemble teaching. A lot of emphasis on playing ji in yoko-uchi (Miyake or Hachijo style). The next class I will be teaching is thursday the 14th. Hope to see many of you there.
